Monstera Adansonii, the Swiss cheese plant, is a species of flowering plant native to tropical forests of southern Mexico, south to Panama. The leaves on young plants are smaller with holes, similar to the Swiss Cheese which it has the name derived from. Although it can grow very tall in nature, it only measures between 2 and 3 m (6.6 and 9.8 ft) when grown indoors. The leaves are medium (up to 8″ or 10cm wide), heart-shaped and pinnate. The older the plant, the more the leaves are covered with its familiar large perforations..

These starter plants are 12+ inches tall when we ship them bareroot. Pictures used for this web store depict mature plants of the correct species.

Once planted keep the ground moist for two weeks then water weekly from then on. If it rains 1/2 inch or so takes that week off from watering. Do not fertilize for 2 months, then use only slow-release fertilizer like Osmocote.

The Care

Choose a well-drained area for this moderately drought-tolerant plant. Plant with a combination of top soil or organic peat moss mixed with composted cow manure added to the hole. You’ll rarely have to trim – its clumping growth pattern forms an attractive cushion shape all by itself. Water regularly but be sure to allow the plant time to dry out between waterings. Too much water can kill any philodendron plant. Fertilize 3 times a year – spring, summer, and fall – with a quality granular fertilizer.
