The Agave Schidigera ‘Shira Ito No Ohi’ is a unique and limited Agave, native to North America. It is also known as the Queen of White Thread or the Century Plant. The name ‘Century Plant’ is believed to come from the fact that this is a very slow-growing Agave. As with many of the Agave Species, this plant will bloom when it is 15-20 years old. This Agave slowly forms a solitary rosette of narrow lance shaped leaves with curly white threads. The darker green leaves have striking creamy yellow to white margins that end in a sharp, red toned cinnamon spine that forms a very rigid, upright rosette. When this plant matures after many years, a 10′ spike carrying red-purple buds and greenish flowers rises high above the main rosette.
This is a hardy, drought tolerant plant. It requires well draining, cactus/succulent soil with proper drainage and bright, direct sun exposure. Water thoroughly when soil is dry to the touch. Protect from frost to avoid scarring. The impressive size of this Agave make it perfect for outdoor landscaping, but will also thrive in a large indoor planter.
