Perfect perfumed entrance way plants. The Queen Emma lily (named for the consort of King Kamehameha IV) is a type of crinum lily, or spider lily. Most people know of the crinum lily as a plant with green leaves and white flowers that stand above the foliage. Perfect plant to grow inside during the long winter months because by Spring it will be large and full of flowers. Offer includes 4 cluster plants. Crinums do well in containers as long as they have enough room for their roots. Use a 5-gallon pot for a larger plant and keep the soil moist, but not wet, and place the pot in a full-sun location. Plants reach 5 ft tall. Whether planting in the garden or in a pot, use a balanced fertilizer, or mulch heavily with compost. Crinum augustum tends to have weak-stemmed flowers. The flower buds arise on tall stalks and stick out above the foliage. As one or two of the flowers open, the stem continues to stand erect. Most of the crinums grown in Hawaii have a pleasant scent. It is not overpowering but can fill a small room with its pleasant odor when brought in for a vase. The flowers don’t last long when cut, maybe for one or two days. But for a nice, quick arrangement, clip a few flowers from a spike and put in them in a short vase. Gar-Zen Botanical Designs is located in South Florida.
