Originally created in 1965 by Dr. Joe Furr at Indio, California. It was released for use in Florida as a rootstock around 1999, but later discontinued. A seedling of US 852 is growing in Northern Virginia and withstood 0°F, it died to the ground in a severe winter, but did resprout from the roots. There was one several years old in Philadelphia, and at least one growing in New Jersey.
Fruit is sour but quite tasty. When diluted and sweetened like lemons are able to make a pleasant tasting ‘ade’. The only downside is the high seed count and and strong pith that keeps the segments adhered to the skin.
